This renovation was a comprehensive restructuring of the main floor, specifically designed to accommodate two families by creating more shared space, adding crucial amenities, and dramatically improving natural light.
Problems
The home's existing layout was strained by the demands of multi generational home, from issues such as space, storage, and poor lighting:
Inadequate Amenities: Not enough bathrooms to comfortably serve multiple families and guests during large gatherings.
Poor Flow & Lighting: The kitchen, living room, and dining room felt dark and closed off due to limited lighting and a dividing wall.
Storage Crunch: The coat closet at the front entrance lacked functional storage for shoes, a major issue for a large, multi-generational family.
Outdated Spaces: The kitchen and flooring were small and outdated.

Solution
The renovation focused on structural modification and creative space utilization to solve the flow and amenity challenges:
Structural Conversion: A load bearing wall between the living room and kitchen was safely removed to create a large, open-concept room.
Lighting Upgrade: Two skylights were installed in the ceiling to flood the new open space with natural lighting.
Bathroom Addition: An additional three piece bathroom ensuite was created on the main floor to service the family and guests.
Kitchen Modernization: The kitchen was fully renovated with new cabinets and appliances, centred around a practical movable centre island.
Space Reassignment: A main floor bedroom closet was creatively converted into a much needed laundry room.
Foyer Efficiency: Custom solutions were built for the entrance, including a custom built shoe rack in the coat closet and custom built seating in the foyer.

Key Features
The final design features custom built millwork and structural highlights that maximize the home's function and aesthetic appeal:
Custom Centrepiece: A movable centre island provides flexible workspace and dining options in the kitchen.
Natural Light: The installation of two skylights dramatically brightens the main living area.
Amenity Addition: A new, three piece bathroom and a dedicated main floor laundry room were successfully added.
Foyer Function: A custom built shoe rack and seating system, along with a custom built hidden door providing seamless access to the kitchen from the foyer.
Aesthetic Detail: A feature wall with LED lighting was added to enhance the living space.
In Conclusion
This project successfully transformed the home's ability to host a multi generational family, creating essential new amenities and a unified, open concept living area. The addition of a main floor bathroom and laundry room, coupled with the improved light and flow, significantly improved the home's day to day functionality and comfort.
